Desks are from various rural one-room schools—Aux Sable, Hoge (note graffiti!)
Before 1880 there were no desks—just benches to sit on. Slates were used since paper was expensive. The drinking fountain was a crock filled with water, everyone drank from the same dipper. The room was heated by a wood burning stove, and every kid was expected to bring a lump of coal, some kindling, or corn cobs to keep the room warm.
The Blackboard is from the Hoge School.
