Northwestern Display

Northwestern Novelty Company began in 1909 when everyone smoke cigars. Emerson Bolen invented a machine for dispensing single matches so tavern patrons would stop stealing them off the bar. This novel business of inventing coin-operated vending machines for selling stamps, salted nuts, candies and gum mushroomed after WWI. By 1921, Northwestern was incorporated and operating out of a large building on Armstrong Street, east of town. This business started in Morris Today Northwestern vending machines can be found all across the United States. The business closed in 2018. Now these vending machines are high collectible.
