Chicago to Appomattox: The Grundy and Surrounding Counties Men Who Fought the Civil War to its End, Jason Baker

Grundy County History Museum, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Based upon his recent book “Chicago to Appomattox,” military officer and Grundy County Native, Jason Baker, told the story of men from Grundy, LaSalle and Will Counties who joined a Civil War regiment in Chicago, and served for almost four years before witnessing Robert E. Lee surrender to U.S. Grant to end the war.

Our next program is scheduled for April 26th at 7:00 p.m. We will be displaying and talking about our Hat Collection. We have 85 hats including men’s, women’s and children, Learn a little about the history of Hats and the different styles through the years. You will have a chance to test your knowledge of styles and when they were in vogue.

Reservations are not required for this program. The program is open to all. There is no charge for admittance. Refreshments will be served.

Please attend and wear your favorite hat!

May 24, 2022: Annual Meeting and Dinner

The annual dinner and meeting was held on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 at Turtle’s Tap, 1400 N. Division St. Morris. Check-in began at 6 p.m. The buffet dinner was served at 6:30 p.m. Cost of the dinner is $25.

Immediately following the dinner there will be a short business meeting and the election of the Board of Directors. Terms expire for three board members: Donna Sroczynski, Lisa Barkley and Karen Zelko. All three have agreed to seek re-election. During the meeting members were asked to vote on two amendments to the bylaws. The first amendment was to create the position of Executive Director. The second amendment was to create two additional Board positions. An additional Board member is to be added this year and and the 11th member will be added at next year’s annual meeting. Carter Corsello was nominated to be the 10th Board member. The amendments were unanimously approved. The Board member nominees were unanimously approved. There were no nominations for board members from the floor.

Nick Koba from Coal City will be presenting highlights from his book, “Strip Mining History of the Grundy Will and Kankakee Counties.”

The annual meeting and dinner are open to the public. Please contact the Museum to reserve your place.
